Politician
and collector. John, Lord Lumley (1534?-1609),
inherited his grandfather's estates while still
an infant. He was restored in blood in 1547, and
was created a Baron and Knight of the Bath in
1553, on Sep 29th, two days before the
coronation of Queen Mary. Baron Lumley,
son-in-law of the Earl of Arundel was deeply
implicated with the Earl in the Ridolfi plot,
for the conversion of England to Roman
Catholicism and the marriage of the Duke of
Norfolk to Mary, Queen of Scots. He was
imprisoned in the Tower of London for 2 years
before he was released and restored to his
offices. Durring his imprisonment, his wife was
kept at court, as assurance of his co-operation
in the Ridolfi investigation.
As
a side note, his home, Lumley castle, still
stands, and serves as a hotel in Northern
England. It is said to be haunted by Lily, the
ghost of the wife of the first Baron Lumley, who
converted the original 9th century building into
the main manor house in 1392.
The man who plays Lord Lumley is the first
performer who approached me at the faire and
thanks me for the pictures that I take. He plays
his part well, always in character and he makes
his role interesting. I like watching him and
the rest of the Queen's court, as they obviously
take a lot of pride in creating a full-day long
show which both entertains and enlightens.
